The Clinical Research group seeks to:
Implement state-of-the-art, comprehensive health care services
Support and Perform Inter-center Clinical Trials
Participate in the multi-center clinical trials conducted
by the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center network
Support and Perform Other Clinical Research
Support Basic and Translational Research
Identify appropriate study subjects, obtain informed consent,
and obtain blood and biologic samples for use in basic research
studies
Some examples of clinical science research conducted at the Duke
Sickle Cell Center
1. Genetic Study:
Study of genetic factors that affect the severity of sickle cell
disease
2. Hydroxyurea Study:
Study of the usefulness of hydroxyurea treatment in children and
adults
3. Red Blood Cell Study:
Investigation of the structure of the red blood cell membrane and
abnormalities of the membrane caused by sickle cell disease
4. GeneTherapy and Bone Marrow Transplantation:
Investigation of methods to treat sickle cell disease with gene
therapy and bone marrow transplantation
