Psychosocial
Research
The Center staff recognizes the need for comprehensive support
for patients and their families. Therefore the center conducts psychosocial
research to assess and develop its delivery of psychosocial interventions
and support for patients and their families.
Some examples of basic psychosocial research conducted at Duke
Sickle Cell Center:
1. Study of pain coping mechanisms and psychosocial adjustment
of sickle cell patients;
2. A longitudinal study of neuropsychological findings among children
with sickle cell disease;
3. study of the impact of self-help groups on adults with sickle
cell anemia.
The Center is fortunate to have the collaboration of the psychology
department and the pain team.
