Sickle Cell Education Through Lay Volunteers


Lay Volunteer Training consists of a 10-hour training course by the Sickle Cell Center staff. The program is designed to increase the community’s knowledge of sickle cell disease.

Topics include:
_Introduction to genetic disorders
_Biological and clinical aspects of sickle cell disease
_Social and psychological considerations for people with sickle cell disease

Following completion of the course, participant are asked to assist in community education efforts by haring information with other families, friends, and fellow members of other community organizations and by participating in patient support and advocacy efforts with the help of the sickle cell center staff.
